tournaments 2017

Here is the schedule for upcoming events outside the club. They offer a great opportunity to bring your game to the next level and meet some great people at the same time.

The registration fees are nominal but you'll need to be available all weekend for each event.

The best of them is the Dread Cup in Niagara at White Oaks where players get special room rates and it is a pure squash weekend with amazing matches.

If you have any questions, track down Kinmond and he can fill you in.

SEE YOU out THERE!!

GREG GIBSON MEMORIAL

The Gibson Memorial was established to remember our good friend Greg. He claimed to have once read that in an average squash match you only actually run for 12 minutes. So every fall we gather together and test that theory. His lovely mother Betty presents a bottle of Gibson's Scotch to the victor.

After the fire of 1963, two squash courts were included in the new building and the first squash championship was held in 1966 (won by Harry Miller).

The early players (Paul Jacobson, Craig Wells, Dave Thomas, Chris Commins and Ken Lane) also worked hard to establish a strong squash section at Balmy. House leagues, Hackers league (beginners), junior programmes, Toronto and District (T & D) team entries and, of course, our unique team tournaments (ever see live 1st place lobsters on the dance floor?) were put into place. For many years, the guidelines of 100 players per court were met. The Canadian Centennial Tournament in 1967 was very successful and that year we also hosted the
T & D "B" tournament in our first year of competition. For a number of years (1968 – 72), the Club entered the Ontario Team Tournament and also hosted an Open Invitational Tournament, which many top players from outside the Club attended. In 1969, Paul Jacobson won the T & D "C" division and in the Ontario Team Tournament, Balmy won the consolation round. Also that year, our "C" team was first in T & D league play.

The Skyline Hotel hosted the North American Professionals’ Championship in 1971. This allowed Balmy Beach Club to hold a special event with the World number 1, John Barrington, hosting a clinic and playing an exhibition match against the North American number 1, Sharif Khan. The clinic must have worked because in 1972, our "C" team won the T & D division. Ottawa held their Annual Rideau "C" Team Tournament for a number of years and in 1972 a contingent from Balmy Beach made the trip to Lower Canada and brought home the trophy.

Although the current club did not originally have change rooms and lockers for the ladies, they were unperturbed, slowly found the squash courts, held their first championship in 1982 and entered their first Club team in the T & D in 1991. Another women's team won the T & D championship in 2003. Our squash silver anniversary in 1991 saw an impressive team tournament with former greats returning to play. Pipers, dinner, a dance and exhibition matches by the Khans (Sharif, Hashim and Gul) and our own legend Ken Lane all contributed to a fabulous 25th celebration. We can hardly wait for our diamond jubilee in 2015.

The Club’s Centennial in 2005 ushered in the Wooden Sticks Tournament in which all players must use retro wooden racquets. In 2006, Balmy Beach entered a team in the T & D Masters’ "B" league. Amazingly, this aged group (dubbed the “Wheel Trans” team by their coach) won in front of a large fan turnout.

The section continues to send players to provincial, national and international tournaments as well as running a strong junior program. Sharif has returned to the fold to coach both junior and adult players. And it's a specal pleasure to have him a part of the family once again.
